Our seven-bedroom lodge is your home in the wilds of Patagonia, with delightful staff who give you an immersive Chilean cultural experience. For adventures, a stocked gear room complements the helipad outside, along with a huge deck where sopaipillas and pisco sours greet you afterward. Wood-fired hot tubs and a sauna overlook the river, along with walking trails and a forested asado outpost.

Ranked in the top five whitewater destinations in the world, the Futaleufú delivers an epic rafting experience just an hour away. Outfitted in drysuits and personal flotation devices, you’ll paddle the Futa’s adrenaline-pumping Class 3–5 rapids with seasoned guides. This activity is included in your stay.

Pedal along a quaint old road past cattle and sheep on your way to Tranquillo Valley's turquoise waters on an easygoing bike ride that starts at our Palena Camp. You can also couple this activity with inflatable kayaking. This activity is included in your stay.

Explore the rivers and waterways surrounding Rio Palena by inflatable kayak, with routes ranging from calm scenic paddles to more dynamic stretches of moving water. Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Paddleboard through scenic stretches of the Palena and Futaleufú Rivers or spend a full day exploring the turquoise waters of Lake Yelcho. Surrounded by rainforest, mountains, and abundant wildlife, these outings offer a relaxed way to experience Patagonia from the water.
Walk and Wade Fishing
The lodge’s location along Rio Palena allows you to fish for rainbow and brown trout as soon as you arrive. With a variety of other nearby stretches, your guide team will suggest all the right walk and wade options for your skill level and preferences. We also offer casting instruction on our large lawn or pond to help guests tune their skills. This activity is included in your stay.
Float Fishing
With two anglers and one guide per boat, you can float upper and lower Rio Palena, sections of Rio Futaleufú, Lago Yelcho, and its nearby inlets and outlets. Jet boats, rafts, and drift boats are all used to maximize your time fishing. Our favorite is a full-day float on the lower Futaleufú and into Lago Yelcho. This activity is included in your stay.
Heli-Accessed Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Reach a hidden alpine lagoon by helicopter, where a glacier frames the crystal-clear water. Early in the summer, stand-up paddleboard beside floating ice, or hike and swim around the lake as the season warms. Up to two heli-assisted activities are included in your stay, based on conditions and length of stay.

Heli-Fishing
Join your guides on a scenic flight into the backcountry to cast to rainbows, browns, and brookies on high-country rivers like Rio Azul, the upper Tigre, and Rio Tranquillo, as well as remote lakes like Lago X and Lago Rosas. We can access both walk and wade options and floatable sections by helicopter. Heli-fishing is included at some locations and available for an additional fee at others—ask the Experience Team for details.
Heli-Mountaineering
Fly out to Los Cóndores Ridge and gear up for a Class-4 scramble in the high cordillera, where a spine of solid granite extends to the top of Mt. Gabriel. Watch for condors as you take in the panoramic views of the Andes, then rappel back down for your heli pickup. Up to two heli-assisted activities are included in your stay, based on conditions and length of stay.
Scenic Flights
Flying is a mind-blowing way to experience the immensity of Patagonia and the Andes. With a few different route options, you’ll see glaciers and high cordillera lakes untouched by humankind. This can be paired with a peak picnic and a fine bottle of wine. This activity is included in your stay.

Rio Palena Lodge is located in Northern Chilean Patagonia, Chile, surrounded by rivers, mountains, forests, and glaciers. The lodge provides access to some of the region's most remote landscapes, including the Futaleufú River, one of the world's premier whitewater rivers.
To get here, most guests fly into Santiago, Chile, connect to Puerto Montt, and then take a private charter flight to Palena Airfield, approximately 20 minutes from the lodge. Guests may also charter directly from Santiago or arrive via scheduled flights to Chaitén. Our team will help coordinate your arrival and arrange ground transportation to the lodge, view getting here details.

A half-day rafting experience is included in your stay, and a full-day experience can be arranged for an additional fee.

Not at all. Fly fishing is just one of many adventures available during your stay. Guests who prefer rafting, hiking, kayaking, or other activities can build an itinerary around those experiences instead. For anyone interested in learning, our guides are happy to introduce the basics.
Yes. Rio Palena Lodge welcomes guests of all ages, and many adventures can be adapted for families. Because there is no onsite childcare, we recommend traveling with a nanny if dedicated childcare will be needed during your stay. You can see an example of what a stay could look like for a family as well as details on recommended age ranges here.
Yes. The lodge is available for exclusive-use buyouts, making it an excellent option for families, groups of friends, celebrations, or corporate retreats. Individual room reservations are also available.
Most stays at Rio Palena Lodge require a minimum of three nights, though this can vary depending on the time of year. We recommend planning at least five nights to give yourself time to experience a variety of adventures and enjoy the pace of the lodge.
The Asado is one of the signature evenings at Rio Palena Lodge. Held at our riverside outpost beneath a grove of trees (weather permitting), it brings together guests, guides, chefs, and lodge staff for an evening of open-fire Patagonian cooking, local traditions, and conversation.
Rio Palena Lodge does not offer connecting rooms. The Palena Suite can accommodate two children on the sofa bed in its living area, and two guest rooms can be configured with twin beds. Because the lodge has only seven guest rooms, families are typically able to stay close together.
